REMINDER: Two walks, 18 October

Two walks coming up on Saturday 18 October as contributions to the Vine Recreation Ground Autumn Fayre:

11 a.m.  All age Wonderful Weeds.

1.30 p.m. Healing Hedgerows.

Nearest station Barnes; both free.

Report:  Although this pleasant event was well attended, not many people chose to attend the two walks: eight in the morning, and six in the afternoon.

The morning walk went well with participants engaging in discussion, and later trying out some of the children’s games, such as ‘cock or hen’ using false oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius).  Two people kindly recorded their memories for inclusion in the Archive.

Unfortunately there was some confusion about the start time of the afternoon walk.  According to some publicity it started at 1 p.m., according to other publicity it started at 1.30.  It was decided that the latter time was the correct one, consequently what was expected to be an hour walk as restricted to half-an-hour, making it difficult to establish sufficient rapport with participants, before they rushed off to a fungus walk which started at 2 p.m.  It appears that this confusion was largely, if not entirely, the leader’s, not the organisers’ fault; apologies! However, people seemed to have enjoyed the walk and contributed to the discussion.
