St Joseph’s lilies

Posted on by royvickery |

Statue of St Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary, in the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St John the Baptist, Norwich.  Although Joseph was traditionally depicted as an old man, here he is portrayed as a young man, carrying the Christ Child and a stem of white lilies (Lilium ?candidum].  As a symbol of purity the lilies represent Joseph’s commitment to a life of chastity, thus protecting Mary’s virginity.

Photographed May 2026.
