Sunflower as a symbol of Ukraine -1

Ukraine is the world’s largest producer of sunflower, Helianthus annuus, seeds and oil.  And Ukraine has adopted  the sunflower as its national flower. On 25 February 2022 British newspapers carried a photograph of a ‘fearless Ukrainian woman’ giving a Russian soldier  sunflower seeds, ‘telling him to put them in his pocket so that a sunflower could grow out of it when he dies in Ukrainian territory’.  The image, filmed in Henichesk, ‘quickly went viral’.

Thus it is not surprising that sunflowers have become a symbol of the Ukrainian people’s resistance to the Russian invasion.  The two images here were taken outside the Russian Embassy, in Notting Hill, London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, on Saturday 26 February 2022.

A few of  protestors in both Notting Hill and Whitehall carried sunflowers, more people carried yellow narcissi, Narcisssus cvs, or goldenrod, Solidago sp.
